Advancing Sustainability Literacy at HKBU - with Sulitest TASK™

Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) is committed to fostering sustainability literacy across our academic programmes and wider community. The Office of Institutional Research and Planning (OIRP) has successfully piloted the Sustainability Literacy Assessment (SLA), based on the globally recognised Sulitest TASK. We invite academic staff to integrate this tool into their courses to assess student knowledge and enhance curricula, while encouraging both academic and non-academic staff to take the SLA to deepen their own understanding of sustainability.

What is SLA?

SLA is a flexible, evidence-based assessment that evaluates understanding of sustainability concepts, spanning environmental, social, and economic dimensions. For academic staff, it provides valuable data to refine teaching and align courses with HKBU’s mission to develop responsible global citizens. Additionally, both academic and non-academic staff can take the SLA themselves to gain insights into sustainability issues, fostering a university-wide culture of awareness and engagement.

Benefits for Academic Staff

  • Student Insights: Identify strengths and gaps in students’ sustainability knowledge to inform teaching strategies.

  • Curriculum Enhancement: Use SLA data to assess and improve course content, ensuring effective sustainability integration.

  • Personal Enrichment: Take the SLA to explore sustainability concepts and align your teaching with global standards.

  • Institutional Impact: Contribute to HKBU’s goal of producing sustainability-literate graduates.

Opportunities for All Staff

Non-academic staff are also welcome to take the SLA, offering a chance to enhance their own sustainability knowledge and contribute to HKBU’s sustainability ethos. This inclusive approach strengthens our collective commitment to a sustainable future.

Support from OIRP

OIRP is dedicated to supporting academic staff in integrating the SLA seamlessly. We offer:

  • Workshops: Practical training on embedding the SLA into courses and interpreting results.

  • Ongoing Assistance: Direct support for any questions or challenges.

We invite staff to partner with OIRP by incorporating the SLA into their courses, and we encourage all staff—academic and non-academic—to experience the assessment themselves. This is an opportunity to strengthen curricula, enrich personal knowledge, and advance HKBU’s sustainability mission. To join or learn more, contact Chris at cknollman@hkbu.edu.hk
